Earth Diamonds Are Redefining Traditional Engagement Ring Style

While there’s no competing with the timeless beauty of a classic round brilliant diamond solitaire engagement ring, another stone has been quietly capturing hearts in the bridal marketplace. Rough-cut and gloriously imperfect, Earth diamonds - also known as salt and pepper diamonds - are earning a devoted following among brides-to-be drawn to something unique and unconventional. For those dreaming of an alternative engagement ring, this is the centre stone they imagine, even before they know it by name.

The allure of these unique diamonds - typically a smoky silver-grey, speckled with visible white and black inclusions - may be lost on those who live and die by the Four Cs, but that's kind of the point.

"Our clients who choose Earth diamonds are drawn to the raw beauty of the stone's natural flaws; proof of its origins deep within the earth. They're seeking something quietly extraordinary - a one-of-a-kind stone that still carries the durability and enduring significance of a traditional diamond."

Beyond aesthetics, Earth diamonds are inherently sustainable, a quality that resonates deeply with today's eco-conscious millennial buyers. The use of irregular, speckled and veined diamonds creates far less waste of precious resources. The result is a design movement of definitively unique jewellery and engagement rings that, by their very nature, cannot be mass-produced.

Earth diamonds are mostly white, grey or black, with 'salt-and-pepper' like flecks scattered throughout. Paired with the sparkling facets of the rose cut, they become something truly captivating - each stone reminiscent of a clear night sky. As Jodi describes:

"I think they are so hypnotic and distinctive. I love how each one is totally unique from the next, with tiny little galaxies trapped inside the diamond. Mother Nature really is amazing."

THE CUT

The rose cut - so named because its facets are designed to evoke an opening rose bud - features a flat base and a gently domed top, giving it a lower profile than a standard brilliant cut.

Rose cut diamonds are hand cut, ensuring no two are ever exactly alike. Combined with their natural, unenhanced inclusions that give each stone its own colour and character, it's easy to understand why so many people are drawn to this distinctive cut.

At Jewels of the Kimberley, every diamond in our Earth Diamond Collection is guaranteed to be of natural colour and clarity, true to its grading. Our stones have been ethically sourced and have not been artificially enhanced or treated in any way.

Our qualified in-house Gemmologist personally selects each diamond and strictly adheres to the international grading standards developed by the GIA (Gemmological Institute of America). Every stone is unique - some translucent, others more opaque - most featuring that distinctive salt and pepper matrix, exactly as they appeared when first discovered in the earth.

We hope these diamonds bring generations of happiness to those who wear them. You can do so with the confidence that they are among the world's most unique and untouched gemstones.
