The Lagoon Series: Twenty Years in the Making

The original inspiration for the Lagoon Series dates back to 2002, when master jeweller Jodi Penfold saw something special that others didn't - that coloured stones and lustrous pearls paired beautifully together.

More than twenty years on, Jewels of the Kimberley returns to that beginning. This series is a homage to where it all started: a celebration of two decades of artistry, and of the gemstones that first defined Jodi's work long before her name was known. To mark the milestone, she went back to the pearls and coloured stones she began crafting with all those years ago, and brought to them everything she has learned in the years between. The same stones she started out with, now with a far steadier and more practised hand.

A Place, A Feeling, A Moment Held

The series draws from the still beauty of Roebuck Bay, where light moves across calm water and the colour of the sea shifts with every passing hour. Soft pastel hues and fluid forms echo that gentle rhythm, the way water shapes everything it touches, and the way it never quite holds still.

A one-of-a-kind neckpiece is at the heart of the collection. Created entirely by Jodi's hand, the Lagoon Neckpiece brings together 18ct gold, luminous aquamarines and Broome pearls, shaped through patience, precision and intent. It will remain in her forever collection, an expression of artistry that will not be repeated.

The Coastline, Worn

From the neckpiece, the collection unfolds into a series of earrings, rings and pendants that carry the same spirit. The pastel gems shimmer with shifting light, their stunning tones reminiscent of the blues of Roebuck Bay and the warm blush of Cable Beach at sunset. Keshi pearls, formed naturally in Broome's pristine waters, lend an organic softness, while fine diamond accents catch the light like sun dancing across the tide.

Look closely and you'll notice the care in the proportions. Jodi sets the gems so they appear to float when worn, present but never heavy. Pieces like the Lagoon Pendant and the Cascading Lagoon Earrings carry the collection's signature movement, contemporary yet timeless, and unmistakably of this place.

Pushing Convention

There is something fitting about returning to pearls and coloured stones now. When Jodi first began pairing them in 2002, it was a radical thing to do. Setting coloured gemstones against pearls ran against a world that tended toward the conservative. The Lagoon Series channels those early influences and carries them forward, giving a traditional pairing a contemporary edge. It reflects both Jodi's beginnings and her evolution, two decades apart, held in the same hand.

Celebrated on the Water

It felt right to share the collection where it was inspired. Aboard True North we celebrated twenty years of Jewels of the Kimberley with the first presentation of this special suite - out on the water, surrounded by the light and landscape that shaped it. Now we are delighted to share it with you.

The Lagoon Series is available to view online and in our Broome showroom on Dampier Terrace. We'd love to help you find the piece that tells your story.
